Tips for Skiing

Skiing is great fun and fantastic exercise but it is always worth knowing the rules of the mountains to have a fun and safe holiday. Holiday Insurance Web has put together some tips for staying safe on the slopes.

Knowing the Slopes
— Take a lesson from a qualified instructor. They will know the slopes and will be able to give you great tips whatever your level of expertise.
— Know your ability – use your trail map to plan where you can and can't ski.
— On the slopes, people ahead of you have the right of way. When overtaking a slower skier leave plenty of room and warn that person of your presence.
— Always try to stay in control and avoid other skiers and obstructions, taking a note of all the posted signs and warnings.
—When starting on a downhill run look uphill for any oncoming traffic.
—Know the mountains rules – these may change slightly from each area and are worth reading of before you start.

Keeping Healthy
— Dress in layers so that you regulate your temperature and not get too cold or too warm.
— Wear sun protection - Don't underestimate the sun when on the ski slopes even on cloudy days. The rays from reflecting off the snow are always stronger than you think!
— Wear eye protection – sunglasses and goggles
— Find out how to use the ski lifts safely with a knowledge of how to get on and off the lifts.
—Be aware of the snow conditions and how they can change very quickly.
