The word safari comes from Swahili, meaning a long overland journey and is now used to refer to tours through African national parks specifically to observe wildlife. The word is also used in a broader context in many parts of the world, especially in holiday destinations to signify a trip into the wilds to see exotic species and perhaps to travel in an all terrain vehicle or jeep and to spend nights at camps or in some form of temporary shelters.
Safari can also be seen as a distinctive way of hunting which was popularized by western travellers on the African continent. It is a several days or even weeks-long journey and camping in the bush or jungle, while pursuing big game.
Both types are possible to find special holidays for, or to partake in while you are already on a vacation. If you are going into the wild, there are several precautions you should take and special knowledge you should be made aware of, both for yourself and also with respect to the often fragile ecology of the last remaining wildernesses of this earth.
