Paragliding

recreational, competitive sport that is best described as a hybrid of hang gliding and parachuting. The paraglider is free flying, unattached and controlled by the glider, unlike the parachutes used in parasailing or parascending which is generally thought of as more of a passive amusement rather than an active participation sport. Paragliders are controlled by the use of cords held in the pilot’s hands as he or she sites in the harness. Typically they are launched from slopes near the summit or hills in light wind conditions. Paragliding offers many of the joys of hang gliding and parachuting in a slightly less alarming and more accessible package, avoiding the initial fright (but perhaps also some of the thrill) of the plane-jump of parachuting, and giving much of the exhilaration of the controllable gliding of hang gliding.
