Parachuting as a recreational activity, rather than as a method of deployment of military personnel, involves the breaking of a free fall, usually from a fixed wing plane, through the use of a self-inflating parachute which is opened from a pack worn on the back along with the canopy harness.
Once the parachute is opened, the jumper can control his or her direction and speed with cords called "steering lines", with hand grips called "toggles" that are attached to the parachute, and so he or she can aim for the landing site and come to a relatively gentle stop in a safe landing environment.
Most parachutist and skydivers make their first jump with an experienced and trained instructor, during which the jumpmaster is responsible for the exit of the plane and in activating and controlling the descent.
National parachuting associations exist in many, to promote their sport. It is possible to be trained how to parachute and execute a successful jump in one day. And in many holiday locations commercial companies with affiliated instructors can supervise this popular, if challenging holiday activity.
