Mountaineering

In general terms mountaineering can include “peak-bagging”, where few technical skills or equipment are needed to reach the summit of a mountain. It can also include complex full-blown expeditions planned months or even years in advance to world’s highest peaks, where man can face the most extreme environments on this earth. Generally, mountaineering is a sport that adds specialized ice climbing skills and gear to those of rock climbing. It also tends to be destination or goal-oriented. Popular forms of mountaineering for enthusiasts from Britain are to climb high in the Alps, the Himalayas, the peaks of the highlands of Scotland and challenges in the Andes or Rockies on the American continent.

It is sometimes known as Alpinism, after early intrepid explorers from the UK who first popularized mountain climbing in France and Switzerland.

Mountaineering is a highly specialized form of holiday travel, and is prone to much danger, from falls, from adverse weather conditions and above all lack of preparation, especially on the descent, where a vast majority of fatal accidents occur.
