Fencing

Called escrime in French, and the language from where all the main fencing terms derive (epee, piste, parry, riposte malparry, remise, redoublement and so on), fencing denotes any system of sword-based offence and defence generally of European origin. Basically it refers to the martial art of swordplay, Olympic sport-fencing, stage-fencing or academic fencing.

As an art or sport, sword play has roots in ancient history and throughout the middle ages the tradition was passed along generations of fencing masters. Formal duels used to resolve disputes of honour used certain fencing forms in the nineteenth century. Fencing was included in the first modern Olympic Games in 1896 and the sport is now played all over the world, with players organised into college or university teams, and the study of the practice often starting during school age.
