Tips for Backpackers

Whether travelling around Europe, working in Australia or seeing the whole world you should ensure that your safety is the number one priority. Holiday Insurance Web has put together some tips that you may need before you leave and when you are travelling.

General
— Always give yourself plenty of time to check in at airports.
— Know the laws and customs of the different countries you are travelling to and make sure you abide by them.
— Obtain a police report in the event of any loss or theft of your items.
— Should you be arrested whilst in a foreign country, request that you speak to your Embassy or consulate as soon as possible.

Money
— Keep your money safe.
— Don't take large amounts of cash, instead take travelers cheques and use credit cards where possible.
— Keep valuables in different compartments/pockets and don't pack them in your luggage. Try to use a money belt.
— Have the telephone numbers of your bank and credit cards handy in case of loss or theft.

Passports/Visas
— Check that all your passports, visas, permits, vaccinations and other health requirements are up to date.
— Before you leave home take 2 photocopies of your passport, insurance, tickets and other import documents. Leave one copy with a friend or family member and keep the other copy in a safe place with you.
— If your passport is lost or stolen, report it immediately to your embassy or the police.

Health
— Consult your doctor well in advance of travelling for advice and to arrange immunisations.
— If you take medicines to other countries, find out if there are any restrictions by asking the relevant embassy or Home Office Drug Branch (Tel: 020 7273 3806).
— Ensure that you have enough prescription medicine for your trip and keep photocopies of any essential prescriptions, in case of loss or theft.
— Visit the dentist before you go.
— Check that the water is safe to drink or buy bottled water.
— Take a small first aid kit with you.

Safety
— When staying in hostels check that the electrical fittings and heaters are safe. Take a note of where the fire exits are.
— Don't leave your luggage unattended or with strangers. Try to use the hotel safe or lockers.
— Always notify people where you are going and give them an itinerary of your trip and contact numbers.
