Some 12 per cent of Britons are planning to spend Christmas abroad this year, research indicates, although eight per cent may not have holiday insurance cover.The most popular destinations include Spain, France and Italy, the data from Sainsbury's Bank reveals.
However, the financial services provider advised people to take out holiday insurance for the trip, claiming that some 457,000 people would not arrange cover.
Robert O'May, travel insurance manager at Sainsbury's Bank, said: "Taking a break at Christmas is a perfect way to escape the cold British climate.
"Whatever your plans this Christmas, if you are travelling overseas, ensure you have adequate travel insurance in place should you encounter any problems."
The research revealed regional differences in the number of people planning festive holidays, with Londoners topping the list at 16.6 per cent.
Those in the south-west and Wales are least likely to take an overseas holiday at Christmas, with 7.6 per cent planning a trip.
Meanwhile, the Rafaelhoteles chain is offering holiday discounts of up to 70 per cent on standard room rates for holidaymakers booking between December 21st and January 14th.
