Young people going on holiday this summer should take more care than most to ensure they have holiday insurance, according to new research. Sainsbury’s Bank has discovered that 31 per cent of those aged 15-24 suffered a misfortune such as falling ill or losing money while on holiday.
One in four of those aged 25-34 experienced similar problems, while the figure fell to 17 per cent for those aged 35-44 and over 65.
Despite the frequency of problems encountered while away, the study shows that 1.48 million people aged 30 or under are expected to still go abroad without holiday insurance.
Robert O'May, Sainsbury's travel insurance manager, said: "Our research shows that younger people tend to be at greater risk of suffering misfortune on holiday than older people, which makes it all the more important that they have travel insurance.
"Without it, they could find themselves with no assistance and potentially very expensive medical bills. Despite this, they are far less likely to take out cover."
