Workers choosing to go travelling

06 April 2006  An estimated 1.75 million British workers will be taking a break from their career, buying some travel insurance and heading off on an overseas trip in 2006.

This is an increase from last year's figures which saw more than 800,000 Brits leaving their jobs to go travelling, according to a new survey by Direct Line Travel insurance.

Australia is the top destination for those planning a career break with their multi-trip travel insurance, with the USA and Western Europe proving equally popular, closely followed by South East Asia.

Chris Price, business manager at Direct Line Travel Insurance comments: "Our research shows that 73 per cent of workers who have taken a sabbatical are over 35 years old so it would seem that people are taking career breaks later on in life [and] lots of companies include sabbaticals as part of the job package they offer to new recruits."

The survey found that while ten per cent of professionals in the north-east were planning a with travel insurance worthy trip, only seven per cent in London were prepared to take a break, with nearly a third of those taking a career break prepared to take unpaid leave to get away.

Direct Line Travel insurance also found that a fifth of workers would not return to their current job on returning from their trips.

The survey interviewed 2,131 British adults from across the country and was carried out by YouGov.
