While some Britons may be looking out their window and hoping for a change in the weather at home, many are already thinking ahead to colder times and considering a holiday in the sun this winter.The Association of British Travel Agents (Abta) has reported that, despite the popularity of skiing holidays, it's trips away for the winter sun that make up the majority of holidays booked for this time of year.
Destinations including Africa and the Caribbean lead the long-haul flight lists, while the Canary Islands remains an enduring nearer break.
"Most of the cruise ships that sail in the Mediterranean over the summer are in the Caribbean in the winter, so it is a great way of seeing more than one or two islands in the Caribbean, and that is becoming increasingly popular," said Frances Tuke, a spokesperson for the association.
She added that Gambia, Kenya and Tanzania are increasingly popular destinations for Britons travelling a bit further afield.
In 2004, Halifax urged Britons to ensure they take necessary medical precautions when travelling to exotic locations, as well as purchasing sufficient holiday insurance, claiming that half of all Britons who travel to Kenya contract some type of illness.
