A staggering 1.4 million Brits will attend at least one wedding abroad during 2005, with more than four million people having been to one overseas wedding in the last three years, a survey by the insurer found.
Individuals attending UK weddings will spend an average £300 on the event, whilst those travelling overseas face an average bill of around £1,300.
The cost of a foreign wedding for the bride and groom is lower than a UK based ceremony, where couples pay on average £16,000. The average cost of a wedding in Sri Lanka is just £540, according to Halifax Travel Insurance.
Vicky Emmott of Halifax Travel Insurance said: "With weddings abroad becoming more common place you might expect that some guests would think twice about accepting an invitation, however it seems the vast majority of Brits (73 per cent) would attend a wedding no matter where it was."
The Halifax poll also discovered that nine per cent of respondents would use a foreign wedding as an excuse to see a part of the world they might not ordinarily have chosen to visit, 13 per cent would turn up fearing the bride would never speak to them again if they didn't, 12 per cent would turn up to avoid a family rift and a further ten per cent would do so just to be nosy.
