US consumers told to read 'holiday insurance' small print

14 April 2006  American travellers are being advised to check the small print of their travel insurance policies to ensure they are covered if they are forced to cancel a trip.

Millions of US citizens plan to travel abroad each year, with some forced to cancel at the last minute, in the event of illness or a similar emergency.

Salt Lake City's KUTV reports that Carole and David Colin were forced to cancel a trip they had booked last April after he became ill and discovered that their holiday insurance did not protect them.

It is important when buying travel insurance cover to check that the policy provides protection against unavoidable and unforeseen circumstances leading to cancellation, as the Colins' mistake cost them almost $4,100 dollars.

Michael O'Malley from the American Society of Travel Agents, explained that travellers should make sure they are informed about the level of cover they are purchasing, particularly when booking expensive vacations such as cruises or package holidays.

He stated that there are three basic types of travel insurance – a cancellation protection plan, which provides cover up to 24 hours before departure, platinum insurance, which enables customers to cancel at any time, and insurance from an independent company, which covers cancellation at any point and provides bankruptcy cover.
