Travellers to the US are being warned that they could face extensive delays and problems because of problems with the country's airports. The Transportation Department Inspector, General Ken Mead, issued the advice as millions prepare for the annual getaway, Fox reports.
Statistics show that nine major airports in the US - including Philadelphia, Miami, Washington Dulles and Chicago O'Hare - are running at delay rates of 30 per cent or more.
Thunderstorms and the potential for major electrical storms often impact on the flight schedules, with many experts predicting this year will prove unusually active.
Now Mr Mead is waiting to see whether the delays are a structural or a temporary issue.
"It's too soon to tell whether this is a short-term condition resulting from anomalous weather or if it is a more pervasive problem," he wrote in his report.
Travellers are being advised to ensure they have adequate holiday insurance and that they check schedules before flying.
US airlines alone say they expect to ferry more than 200 million travellers to the country over the course of the summer.
