While the prevalence of cash machines abroad that accept UK debit and credit cards can provide a new world of convenience to British holidaymakers, travellers have been warned that the cost of using their card abroad can soon mount up.Financial services comparison firm MoneyExpert notes that the average cost of cash withdrawal from with a debit card abroad is £3.67 and has urged holidaymakers to check their bank's charges before they pop their card in the slot.
Sean Gardner, chief executive of MoneyExpert, said: "There's a price to be paid for [the] convenience of using your plastic overseas.
"The old-fashioned ways of changing your currency or taking travellers' cheques should not necessarily be dismissed."
He added that using a cashpoint abroad could cut in to savings made by the current strength of the pound against a number of world currencies.
In May 2007, holiday insurance provider the Post Office advised travellers to change up their foreign currency before they head abroad in order to get the best deal.
