Travel industry told to prepare for bird-flu impact
01 November 2005  Travellers could be prevented from flying if predictions over a lethal pandemic of bird-flu prove to be true, reports the Associated Press.

Industry experts have warned that international travel would be virtually impossible and long haul flights to far-flung countries banned in an attempt to stop the spread of the virus.

Australia's health minister Tony Abbott urged the travel industry to be prepared and said that drastic measures could be implemented to reduce the volume of travellers visiting foreign countries.

Following widespread concern on the extent and possible spread of the virus, China announced it is introducing bird-flu prevention teams across its capital city to prevent the sale of wild birds at local markets.

Beijing has recently banned the display and sale of wild birds and hopes that the prevention teams will reduce the threat to residents and visitors.

The threat of restricted air travel will come as bad news to potential travellers, as well as emphasising the importance of adequate travel insurance, with full health cover, for trips to exotic locations.
