Swiss suffer strikes
15 July 2005  A strike among taxi drivers at Zurich airport is causing havoc for many holidaygoers using the airport.

The strike outside the airport has now entered its fourth day, reports Swissinfo.

On Monday, negotiations between taxi drivers, who are represented by Switzerland's largest union Unia, and employers at IG Airport Taxi, broke down without compromise.

Meanwhile, Unique, the taxi hub's operating company, fears the reputation of the airport is being damaged as people struggle to get to and from the airport.

Problems first started at the start of the year, when a new contract between IG Airport Taxi and Unique decreed that cars working at the airport would have to pay twice as much for their annual fee.

There is still no sign of the dispute being resolved, which means that passengers will continue to be affected.

Swissinfo also reports that 100 passengers were stuck at Basel airport after nine Swiss flights were cancelled after 52 pilots were suspended.

Such industrial action reinforces the need for holiday insurance to counter any problems that could arise whilst abroad.
