Several weeks of bad whether has encouraged Brits to head for sunnier climbs, Life Style Extra reported. Travel companies have seen a rush for last minute holidays, with bookings for weekend breaks rising by 39 per cent since the weekend. Popular destinations included Barcelona, Venice, Rome and Palma, according to Lastminute.com.
But not all are heading for stereotypically sunny destinations, with cities such as Prague, Paris and New York appealing to jet setters as much as Spain and Italy.
"Jetting off to Dubai this weekend is comparable to Europe in terms of pricing. Three nights in a three-star hotel in Dubai start from £362, and three nights in Majorca start from £387," said travel director John Bevan.
"Of course the flight is far longer but there is guaranteed sunshine and tax-free shopping awaiting you. Brits are not bothered by an eight hour flight anymore - we are used to trips to places like New York which take similar time."
He added that the terrorist attacks in Egypt and London over the last year have not put off travellers.
However, companies have warned many holiday-makers are likely to have forgotten to take out adequate holiday insurance when they travel abroad.
The Post Office recently urged travellers on short breaks to make sure they take out adequate travel insurance cover as research says younger holidaymakers tend to overlook it.
