Despite the rise in popularity in year-round short breaks, a new survey by the Post Office has revealed that the traditional summer holiday is still the most popular trip of the year, especially with families. Although more than a third of people plan to take two or more short holidays throughout the year, 43 per cent of holiday makers across the UK are planning a traditional summer trip, with at total of 1.1 million more people planning to take a holiday this year than in 2005.
Head of travel services at the Post Office, Hugh Stacey, commented: "This year looks set to be a bumper year for travel with over 30 million of us planning to take a holiday. Nowadays it’s cheaper to travel than ever before; the rise of the internet as a sales channel and competitive pressures in the market have forced prices down, which is great news for UK holiday-lovers."
This has impacted on British holiday resorts however, with only 30 per cent of travellers planning a UK break this year compared with 34 per cent in 2005.
People are using their annual holiday insurance to take trips abroad instead, with 43 per cent of people heading into Europe, making it the UK's number one destination last year.
The survey was conducted for the Post Office by ICM, which is a member of the British Polling Council, interviewing a random selection of 2,087 adults aged 18 – 65+ from across the UK.
