Thousands of holidaymakers in the North East of the UK face disruption to their summer plans, with the news that workers at Newcastle Airport plan to strike.Members of the Transport and General Workers Union (TGWU), unhappy with the latest pay offer, have voted three-to-one in favour of striking.
The union claims that staff have asked for an extra one per cent pay increase to the 3.3 per cent they have been offered, on the back of the £17 million profit the airport made in 2004.
Those taking part will involve security staff and firefighters, and the action is expected to cover a 24-hour period some time before July 8th.
Figures from the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) show that in 2004, Newcastle Airport was the fastest growing regional airport in the UK.
More than 3.2 million passengers were expected to use the airport between May and October, an increase of 200,000 from the same time a year ago, and a 55 per cent increase from the same period in 2000.
