Stomach upsets and sunburn top holiday illnesses

An upset tummy, sunburn and serious insect bites topped a list of illnesses Britons pick up abroad, according to a holiday insurance provider.Research by American Express found that medical incidents are the for nearly a third of all holiday insurance claims, with this figure rising to nearly double that for trips to the US.
The company reminds travellers that being in possession of a European Health Insurance Card may not provide adequate cover for all the costs of an unfortunate incident.
Joanne Field, marketing manager at American Express Insurance Services, said: "There are two key things to look for when buying a good travel insurance policy to cover any potential medical claims - does the insurer ask about your good health now and does the insurer offer at least £1 million of medical and repatriation cover."
Last year, a study by Halifax Travel Insurance claimed that Britons are the most likely holidaymakers to get sunburned on their travels.
