Travellers planning on purchasing holiday insurance and their trips abroad for next summer may well be deciding to head to Spain, as the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) reports that the country kept its top spot for visitors in 2006.Following Spain in the list were Greece, Cyprus and Portugal, while visitors to Africa also saw a rise and countries affected by the tsunami in 2004 also had increased bookings.
The association reported that the World Cup in Germany sparked a rise of 32 per cent in visitors and predicted the country would have a strong 2007 as its reputation was confirmed as a welcoming host during the event.
Justin Fleming, president of ABTA, said: "Although our traditional Mediterranean favourites continue to dominate the market, our customers are showing an increasing desire to travel to far flung and exotic destinations."
Earlier this year, holiday insurance provider Halifax reported that 42 per cent of British travellers chose their holiday destination and travel times with an eye on being able to keep up with the action from the World Cup this summer.
