Spain - the perennial summer holiday favourite - has kept its place at the top of the travel league this year, with nearly 14 million people heading to the country this year, it has been reported.Figures from AA Travel Insurance reveal that France is not too far behind, with 12 million Britons heading across the Channel in 2007, while the "surprise" third place was Ireland, which welcomes four million British tourists every year.
The firm notes that the Saturday just gone is officially the "emptiest" in the calendar, as countless tourists dodge the variable British weather and head abroad.
Christian Young, chief executive officer of the firm, said: "With so few opportunities for a lengthy holiday and the not-so-hot British summertime it's no real surprise that the weeks before bank holiday offer an added incentive to go on holiday."
He added that the company's guide to Getting a Better Deal Abroad offers travellers hints and tips on purchasing the correct holiday insurance and advice on changing money.
In June 2007, HiFX reported that Spain also remains the top location for Britons taking the plunge and purchasing a property abroad, with 27 per cent of all enquiries received relating to the country.
