Spain to introduce new security measures
23 May 2007  Britons picking up their holiday insurance and travelling to Spain this summer could have to endure delays at the airports following the introduction of new security measures.

European rules requiring passengers to provide information including their full name and passport number are set to be introduced next year across the EU, but Spanish authorities have elected to introduce the advance passenger information system on June 13th this year.

This decision has resulted in widespread concern regarding possible delays at airports, with Spain a popular destination for UK travellers.

Sean Tipton, a spokesperson for the Association of British Travel Agents, has urged holidaymakers make use of the option to supply the necessary information to their airline over the internet ahead well in advance if possible.

"We would advise customers where possible to input their information online and where that is not possible to check in earlier," he said.

The association claims that the late announcement of the introduction of this scheme has not left enough time to adequately install the necessary technology to make the service a success.
