A forest fire in the Guadalajara province of Spain has killed 11 people and forced hundreds to evacuate their homes. Those who died were voluntary firefighters attempting to control the blaze, but changing wind directions meant they became enclosed by the fire.
Four villages have been affected by the fire, with 400 people having to be evacuated, and 12,000 acres of forest engulfed in flames.
A police spokesman said that the cause of the fire was sparks from a barbeque that had not been properly put out in the Cueva de los Casares natural park – and the group responsible had admitted blame to the police.
The situation is compounded by the fact that Spain is suffering its worst drought since the late 1940s when records first started.
Spain attracts millions of tourists each year, with a large proportion from the UK, and environmentalists have said this is a major cause for the water shortage.
