Severe drought is badly affecting water supplier in some parts of Spain, with the country's water reserves currently standing at just 58 per cent of capacity, with reservoirs in some inland areas standing at just 20 per cent.
As a consequence, agricultural loss has been valued at £1 billion, with the ministry forecasting grain production shortfalls of up to 50 per cent in regions to the south and east, with the wheat and barley crops both falling by nearly half.
The Spanish government is trying to persuade people to be more conservative with water, as it contemplates a rethink of water resources.
"We have to change our idea of water, because there isn't enough water for everything," stated Jaime Pallop, the environment ministry's water department director, according to the Scotsman.
The opposition party has suggested that water from the wetter regions of Spain, in the north, could be transferred to areas of great need.
