New figures showing dramatically varying prices for ski injury treatments around the world have led to warnings that holidaymakers should take care not to neglect their travel insurance. The statistics showed that treatment for a broken leg costs £4,000 in Italy and France compared to £20,000 in the US.
Norwich Union travel product manager Dawn McMullan pointed out that skiers are only protected against such costs with optional winter sports cover in addition to normal travel insurance.
"If you do happen to break a leg or incur any other sort of injury, it's stressful enough having to go to hospital, worry about your health and change all your holiday plans without having to think about the financial aspect of your injury," Ms McMullan commented.
European skiiers have been protected by the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) since its introduction in 2002.
The EHIC, which offers partial cover depending on the country and does not necessarily cover all costs, is preferrably a supplement, rather than a replacement, to normal travel insurance.
