Young adults going on a short break are more likely than their older counterparts to take short cuts on their holiday insurance, a survey has found. Research from the Post Office found that of the 1.5 million 18-24 year olds planning to take a short break this year, a quarter said they will not bother to buy travel insurance for the trip.
Furthermore, a third of those who said they would not take out holiday insurance said they would not need it.
Those aged 45-54 were more cautious, the survey said, with only 12 per cent claiming they would cut back on travel insurance if they were to take a short break.
"Short breaks appeal to younger jetsetters who have the freedom and cash to escape for a spontaneous weekend away. But it's worrying to see how many are overlooking what is a holiday essential," said Hugh Stacey of the Post Office.
Only 14 per cent of holiday insurance policies are bought by people aged between 18 and 24, Mr Stacey claimed.
He added that young people should not "be short-sighted when it comes to quick getaways. Whether you are going away for a couple of days or a fortnight's holiday, you are just as susceptible to theft, loss or accidents".
