Shopping around for currency exchange deals could save UK holidaymakers up to £976 million a year, a new survey suggests. The poll of Brits by Moneyfacts.co.uk shows that almost half of travellers quizzed fail to shop around for the best deal on travel cash.
The research for First Direct indicates that just 55 per cent of consumers shop around for the best deal on their travel money. With some providers charging up to two per cent commission and handling charges of over £5, the average exchange of £550 could cost consumers as much as £16.
Rachel Thrussell, Head of Savings at Moneyfacts.co.uk commented: "With a little shopping around, it’s very easy for holidaymakers to save money. With most providers you don’t have to be a customer, but do check on exchange rates, as these can vary."
A spokesperson for First Direct added: "With people in the UK taking over 61 million overseas trips each year, if every holidaymaker took time out to search for the best deal on their currency, the nation could save enough money to send EVERYONE living in Northumberland, Norfolk, East Sussex and Dorset on holiday!"
The bank has extended its online commission and fee-free travel money offer to the end of January next year, offering competitive exchange rate and next day delivery for cash and traveller's cheques.
