Savvy holiday-makers flock to long-haul destinations

Holidaymakers with an eye to the currency markets are making the most of long-haul destinations, according to one bank. Research for the Royal Bank of Scotland reveals that as the pound weakens against the euro, travellers are packing their bags and taking out travel insurance to head for further away destinations.
Douglas Gowan, head of travel money for The Royal Bank of Scotland said of the trend: "During the last 12 months, fluctuations in exchange rates mean that some preferred holiday destinations no longer offer the value for money they once did.
"However, while some rates have fallen, many long haul destinations continue to offer great or improved value for money and travelling further afield may prove more cost effective for your holiday spending."
Since April 2005, the pound has strengthened against the currency of Iceland, New Zealand, Japan and Jamaica whilst weakening against the euro and dollar.
Because these popular destinations are now cheaper for Britons - from the spas of Iceland to the beaches of Jamaica – savvy holidaymakers are heading there instead.
With many of these destinations offering scuba diving and other exciting activities, travellers are urged to ensure that they have up to date holiday insurance when heading into new destinations.
