HappySun, a new service based on information received from satellites, could help Britons with holiday insurance heading abroad to get a safe suntan.The system uses European Space Agency (ESA) satellites measuring radiation, cloud coverage and ozone levels to calculate the ultraviolet (UV) index throughout the day, to let holidaymakers be aware of what times to stay out of the sun.
A recent World Health Organisation study found that too much exposure to high levels of UV radiation is responsible for 60,000 deaths a year.
Director of the dermatology clinic at the Versilia Hospital Fronco Marsili stated that HappySun could be used for the prevention of skin cancer and to better educate holidaymakers about the sun.
A survey last summer by holiday insurance provider Halifax found that tourists from Britain are the most likely to be sunburned when abroad, while sunburn also came second in a list by American Express of the most common holiday illnesses for Europeans.
