While some travellers may be forced to add the cost of fuel surcharges onto the price of flights, holiday insurance and car hire when booking their trip abroad, a budget airline has issued a guarantee that it will not issue a fuel surcharge and requested that other airlines reduce their charges.Ryanair claims that British Airways is continuing to charge travellers fuel surcharges of up to £70 despite a fall in the price of oil per barrel.
Peter Sherrard, head of communications at Ryanair, said: "Only Ryanair offers Europe's lowest fares, unbeatable punctuality and a guarantee of no fuel surcharges."
He added that it would be appropriate for "high-fares airlines" to lower the fuel surcharge levied on passengers in line with falls in the price of oil.
Last week, British Airways announced that it was lowering its fuel surcharge on longhaul trips lasting less than nine hours to £60 per round trip, down from £70.
The company stated that, reflecting their higher fuel consumption, travellers taking longer-range services, including those with annual holiday insurance, would still incur a fuel surcharge of £70 per trip.
