Rail strikes across France have added to a season of discontent for the country. Delays were caused throughout the week although it is hoped that an agreement will be reached between the government and the SNCF railway operator, which would bring about an end to the strikes.
Starting on Monday, the strikes took place over disputes on pay, bonuses and pensions as well as union concerns that the company will be privatised.
But President Chirac sought to reassure unions yesterday that this would not be the case.
"It is a public company and it will remain one whatever happens...I will naturally vouch for that," Mr Chirac told reporters after a meeting with union representatives which lasted two and a half hours.
According to Reuters, SNCF chairman Louis Gallois has said that the company is set to lose about €20 million a day as a result of the strikes.
Dealing with the rail crisis has been another thorn in the side of the French government, who have only recently had to deal with nationwide rioting centred around racial discontent.
