Two protestors have been killed and others injured in Pakistan after violence erupted over cartoons of the prophet Muhammad, interior minister Aftab Sherpao has revealed. Security guards in Lahore shot the pair as they attempted to set fire to a bank amid the demonstrations.
Police attempted to disperse crowds who tried to storm the Punjab provincial assembly building by firing tear gas and using batons.
The cartoons, which have angered Muslims across the world, were first published in a Danish newspaper in September.
Controversy over the images erupted last month and since then there have been daily demonstrations in Pakistan.
Whilst these protests have so far been relatively small, they appear to be escalating as campaigners from Islamic opposition parties fuel anger prior to a visit by the US president George Bush.
The deaths in Lahore are the first in the country since the demonstrations began.
