Women prefer to holiday together while men of a certain age choose to travel alone, according to a new survey.The research, which was conducted by Portman Building Society, revealed that while both young men and women choose to go away with their friends, in later life males tend to prefer their own company.
Only one per cent of men over the age of 55 said they were planning to holiday with male friends, while 16 per cent of them admitted that they preferred to go on holiday on their own.
Communications manager at Portman Building Society, Helen Shaw, said: "The difference in holiday preferences between the sexes is quite surprising, with a significant proportion of men preferring to holiday alone or considering a quiet place to relax the most important.
"Perhaps there may be some truth to the stereotype of 'grumpy old men'?"
Women in comparison continue to prefer one another's company throughout their lives, with nearly one in ten females over 55 planning a girly holiday in the next year.
Portman is the third largest UK building society with a network of 144 branches.
