The 48-hour strike that had been scheduled to begin at Newcastle Airport on June 30th has been called off, pending the result of a ballot.Last week, nearly 200 staff including air traffic controllers and firefighters had decided to strike after refusing a pay offer.
Further strikes had been planed for July 11th and July 16th, and another 48-hour downing of tolls for July 21st.
The strikes would have brought chaos to the UK's fastest-growing regional airport during the busiest time of the year, as Britons jet off on their summer holidays.
However, after last-minute talks, union leaders and airport officials have come up with an improved offer, which will now be presented to airport workers.
The result of the ballot on this offer is expected to be delivered on July 11th, so although the strikes have been called off for now, the threat of strikes later in the summer remain a distinct possibility.
