At least 19 people have died after a plane crashed off Miami Beach in Florida yesterday. The seaplane, which was headed for the Bahamas, appeared to burst into flames and break apart before crashing into the sea.
None of the passengers are thought to have survived and 19 bodies have so far been recovered.
"There was a flash of fire. Boom. And the wing fell away; it spiralled - you could hear it hit the water," Troy Maness, a surfer and off-duty Miami-Dade firefighter who witnessed the crash from the beach, told USA Today.
An investigation has been launched into the crash; although the FBI despatched agents to the scene, there is no evidence to suggest that it is linked to terrorism or criminal involvement.
The plane was one of a number owned by Chalk Ocean, which runs regular half-hour runs between the island of Bimini and Miami. The airline dates back to 1919 and has ferried numerous passengers including Ernest Hemingway and Judy Garland.
