Plans for an early-warning system to detect tsunamis in the Mediterranean have been put into place by the United Nations (UN). Killing hundreds of thousands, the tsunami on Boxing Day 2004 has encouraged the UN to prepare for a similar disaster in the closer shores of Europe.
Experts from 23 Mediterranean and north-east Atlantic countries joined together last week in a meeting organised by the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation's (UNESCO) Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission to discuss the implementation of early warning systems.
Although the Mediterranean is not always associated with natural disasters such as tsunamis, 100 years ago 85,000 people died after one hit the shores of Italy.
"Early warning is vital for reducing the impact of tsunamis…scores of thousands of lives could have been saved had such a system functioned for the Indian Ocean last December," the UN said in a statement.
In the Pacific the first stages of an early-warning system have been put in place in the waters north of Sumatra, Indonesia.
