The number of travellers complaining about delayed, damaged and lost luggage rose by 15 per cent last year, according to figures from the Air Transport User's Council.While the Association of European Airlines reports that, between April and June last year, more than one million bags went missing for a day or more.
Lost luggage is also one of the top three insurance claims made by travellers and holidaymakers, American Express travel insurance reports.
American Express, however, believes it has come up with a solution for travellers, to prevent the need for holiday insurance claims and to enable them to match owners with items of lost luggage over the internet.
The system called i-Trak assigns a personal barcode tag to each customer, which is attached to luggage and can prevent items from being irretrievably lost.
Joanne Field, marketing manager at American Express travel insurance, commented: "Losing luggage is more than a nuisance and we are delighted to be able to offer a modern, innovative solution."
i-Trak should also cut down on the number of holiday insurance claims needing to be made in future.
American Express also provides financial planning, investment products, on-line broking and international banking.
