Lancashire’s Forest of Bowland has become the first protected area in England to be awarded the European Charter for Sustainable Tourism in Protected Areas. The prestigious title is handed to protected areas that are following a best practice approach in delivering tourism.
The Forest of Bowland is already an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and officials have worked hard to ensure that it is promoted sensitively, taking the needs of the environment, local communities and the local economy into account.
Just 25 other protected areas across Europe have been awarded the charter and local politicians have welcomed the European announcement as good news for the area.
The award will be made at a special presentation in Holland in September by the Europarc Federation, a leading non-governmental organisation that aims to promote and support Europe’s protected areas.
Lancashire county councillor Mary Wilson, vice chair of the Forest of Bowland Joint Advisory Committee, said: "This is a fantastic achievement. The Forest of Bowland AONB is an area of international importance for its landscape and wildlife, with many opportunities for quiet enjoyment and sampling delicious local produce.
"The charter approach ensures that organisations, local people and businesses are working together to protect the area, whilst at the same time increasing opportunities for visitors to discover and enjoy it."
