Italian train crash leaves dozens injured
22 December 2005  Dozens of people have been injured after two trains collided in Italy.

At least 50 people were hurt in the accident, some of them seriously, including an eight-year-old girl from Luton.

Gabriella Vallillo, who was travelling with her family to stay with relatives for Christmas, suffered a fractured skull after the trains collided at a station in Roccasecca, a town roughly 80 miles south of Rome.

Both her parents were also seriously injured; Gabriella and her mother have been transferred to a hospital in Rome for specialist treatment, while her father and brothers remain at a hospital local to Roccasecca, reports the BBC.

Authorities do not yet know what caused the collision, which left several carriages crumpled and overturned, although Italy's transport minister has launched an investigation into the accident.

"A regional train was making the journey between Rome and Cassino and hit another that was stopped at the station," Marco Mancini, Italian railways spokesman, told AFP news agency.

Italy's last serious rail crash was in Bologna last January after a passenger train collided with a freight train, injuring 60 and killing 17.
