The current heat wave in northern Italy continues to cause serious problems, as 18 people have known to have today over the last few days.
Italian media has reported that the majority of the victims were elderly. Donato Greco, a top official at the Health Ministry, told the Associated Press (AP) "these deaths are probably not by chance".
The heat has caused dangerous medical problems for four other people in Milan and five people in Vicenza, both popular holiday destinations for British holidaygoers.
At a news conference on Tuesday, health minister Francesco Storace said that as many as one million people could be at risk if the heat wave went on.
Temperatures in Italy have now been in the 30s Celsius for a week, with northern Italy the worst affected area. In the city of Milan, the temperature reached 32.4 degrees Celsius on Wednesday.
