The survey conducted by Tesco home insurance states that as many as four out of five householders admit to being much less security conscious in hot weather.
Regardless of the risk of burglary nearly a third of people keep an upstairs window open all the time throughout the summer months while one in five leaves their patio doors unlocked all day.
Head of Tesco Home Insurance, Allan Burns, said: "It's important to remember that burglars aren't any less opportunistic during the summer months than at any other time of the year.
"We would encourage all consumers to take the necessary steps as we don't want the traumatic experience of a burglary also becoming a financially painful one."
With one in ten of those surveyed admitting that they had had their house burgled during the summer last year, surprisingly two per cent actually confessed to sleeping with their front doors wide open.
