A new survey has revealed that more than 2.5 million travellers are putting themselves at risk by neglecting to take out holiday insurance for short haul trips. Tesco Travel Insurance has discovered that many people are mistakenly relying on the new European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), which took over from the old E111 form, to protect them but it does not cover certain treatments and services in many countries and is no substitute for comprehensive holiday insurance.
In a medical emergency travellers could face bills of up to £20,000 for being flown home, or hospital bills which the EHIC card doesn't cover, costs which 75 per cent of people interviewed were unaware of.
Head of insurance at Tesco, Allan Burns, commented: "Most people think that because a mini break is short, they don’t need to insure themselves against accidents, thefts or cancellations. But our survey has shown that it is wise to do so. The cost of insurance is not high, but the cost of travelling uninsured could very well turn out to be."
Tesco Personal Finance is a joint venture between the Royal Bank of Scotland and Tesco and was launched in July 1997.
