Holiday operators often mislead the public about the reality of resort destinations, according to the magazine Holiday Which? The advice comes as many people are beginning to shop around for this year's flights, destinations and travel insurance.
Consumers have been warned to be aware of the tactics used by tour companies to mislead people, including the use of artist impressions for hotels which remain unfinished and distortions to the proximity of resorts to main roads and train lines.
"Major operators don't tell blatant whoppers, but they can be pretty economical with the truth," said Lorna Cowan, editor of Holiday Which?
"Descriptions of resorts, facilities and locations were sometimes inaccurate and misleading, particularly when it came to the noise and hazards associated with busy roads and railways."
Ms Cowan added that before booking a holiday, people should carry out extra research into the areas and resorts that they are interested in, rather than simply relying on the word of the operator.
Companies which came under fire from the magazine include Thomson, Airtours and Thomas Cook.
