Average medical costs on holiday total a staggering £291, according to new research. And for holidaymakers who incur serious injuries while abroad, medical bills can even stretch into thousands of pounds, American Express Travel Insurance has found.
The latest report from American Express suggests that more than a third of holiday insurance claims are medical related.
The insurance provider also cited the findings of the Foreign & Commonwealth Office and World Health Organisation member states study, which indicates that roads, the beach and hotels make up the top three locations where holidaymakers are most likely to get hurt.
While on the beach people frequently injure themselves through dehydration or by incurring extreme sunburn, the hotel can serve up hazards such as slipping by the pool and more dangerously: falling off hotel balconies.
American Express cautioned that holidaymakers should also take note that the new European Health Insurance Card, which used to be known as the E111, will not cover every expense and outcome, and good home insurance policies should be sought to avoid costly bills.
