British holiday makers are finding they may not be totally protected from unforeseen expense by their annual holiday insurance when hiring cars in the Mediterranean region. According to a new report by the AA, Britons are being charged for damaged rental vehicles and caught out with hidden charges and insurance rip-offs at car rental garages in resorts across southern Europe.
Project manager for the EuroTest consortium which, last August carried out research for a pan European motoring group, Paul Watters said: "Britons need to be a bit more forceful, adopt the attitudes of some of our fellow Europeans, like the Germans for instance who are strong consumers.
"In many instances, pre-damage was not marked on documentation, which makes a hirer very vulnerable," Mr Watters told Reuters.
Customer service care for more than half of 15 cars hired from well-known international car hire firms was also judged to be poor or very poor and Mr Watters suggested that hirers should reject cars that are not relatively new or in good condition make sure they understand exactly what they are signing for.
The AA warned that British holidaymakers, whatever holiday insurance package they have, should resist pressure to take out expensive car insurance cover and always check for unexpected charges on their credit card statements.
