Temperatures in the last week have risen to a staggering 49 degrees Celsius, claiming the lives of some 54 people in Orissa, in eastern India.
The seasonal monsoon rains have yet to arrive from the south of the country, having stalled over Goa, according to meteorologists.
"The rains hit the coast of Kerala on June 5th and progressed northwards towards Goa by June 8th," Thakur Prasad, deputy director general of meteorology in Mumbai, told AFP.
"But the rains seem stagnant over Goa," he said, adding it was unlikely Mumbai would get monsoon showers within the next two days - the time they are normally expected at this time of year.
Family holiday insurance would be vital in several other Asian countries currently suffering from heatwaves - at least 80 people had died in Bangladesh by last week as a result of extreme temperatures, and parts of Nepal have also been affected.
