Haiti elections marred by violence
15 February 2006  Thousands of enraged protestors stormed into Haiti's capital yesterday, demanding that Rene Preval, the top candidate in the country's presidential election, be declared the winner.

At least one person was killed and several more injured as violence escalated in Port-au-Prince. UN peacekeepers opened fire on protestors according to witnesses, although the UN claims the shots were fired into the air.

Tuesday's election result came as a surprise to Mr Preval's supporters, who expected the popular former president to win with a simple majority. But his lead shrank to less than 50 per cent and it looked likely that he could face a run-off on March 19th.

Protestors have accused election officials of tampering with the votes to keep Mr Preval from winning the first round, although Haiti's electoral council head has denied any claims of fraud.

The Associated Press reports that Mr Preval, who enjoys strong support amongst Haiti's poor, has "questions" about the electoral process.

Final results were to be announced on Sunday, but the protests could now delay them for several days.
