Hundreds of people have been evacuated from dozens of towns in Greece and Bulgaria as heavy rain and snowfall have caused rivers to become swollen and overflow. Thousands of homes have been flooded in Bulgaria and 15 southern and central districts have been declared a state of emergency.
Ruining homes for residents and causing severe problems for travellers in the region without holiday insurance, the floods were "bound" to happen after the long period of rainfall, according to Lili Kostadinova, a spokeswoman for the Bulgarian civil defence agency.
Reuters reports that soldiers and rescue teams are working to bring residents to safety in the Evros region of Greece and its Bulgarian border to the north
"We are preparing for a nightmare. At the moment we are at the mercy of the army who have been told to be on standby to evacuate people," said the Evros prefect.
Popular with tourists, problems caused by such weather in Bulgaria and Greece can result in serious problems to holiday plans, emphasising the importance of annual holiday insurance.
